Paint

I use a number of different acrylic paints. Years ago I used to use enamel paints (by Humbrol), but it is a real hassle cleaning brushes with white spirit. It smells and costs money. Brushed used with acrylic paints can be cleaned in water.

Citadel Colour

These paints are produced by Games Workshop and came as part of a set (hence no label). They are meant for painting fantasy creatures and are therefore gloss. Most clothes etc in real life are matt. They are however nice to work with and are an ideal consistency.

These are also Games Workshop paints. They have labels because they were bought separately (but a long time ago so I do not know how much they cost, but Games Workshop products were never cheap.). They are still available, but I presume they are still gloss. Some of my people have gloss skin which is actually "Dwarf Flesh". I now have found a better colour.

Citadel Colour
Tamiya Color

These paints are produced by Tamiya for use with there range of plastic kits and models. They come in a range of colours in gloss or matt and are the right consistency. However the pots are quite big (23ml) and I have had some of these for many years and have not managed to use them up unless I have painted some big models with a particular colour. I have bought some more recently (for about £2) as they have some different colours from Humbrol (see below).

I bought these one summer when I was working away from home when I could not find anything better. They come in a large range of matt colours, but the bottles are way too large and they are too thin. Sometimes it takes a number of coats to cover sufficiently.

DecoArt Crafter's Acrylic
Humbrol acrylic Colour

I bought two of these a few years ago (purple and a better matt flesh tone). They are very good so ...

I recently bought some more Humbrol acrylics. They now come in small bottles (12ml instead of 30ml) and a range of gloss and matt colours. They are also the right consistency and go on well. They cost about £1 and I would recomend them.

Puddle of pink paint

Try and keep the work area clear, otherwise if you have an accident, you may end up ruining the figures you have just painted. (In this case two figures got slightly pink bases, but no serious damage was done.)

I bought (£3) this paint for the pit building (concrete). It is acrylic so the brush can be cleaned in water. I tried it to undercoat the figures and it went on better than the white paint I had been using.I tried it as matt white acrylic is hard to apply evenly to some of my figures moulded in white plastic.

Some of my other paints cover it well, but some don't. You can see the difference around the marshal's neck and cuffs after one coat of orange over the (dark) grey and over the lighter flesh colour.

When looking for other things in a craft shop I found this set of acrylic paints with lots of new colours and it only cost £5 for 24 pots. That isn't bad value compared to the modelling paints I have bought. The paint goes on well, but some of the lighter colours (eg. orange) are a bit thin.
